We are asking you to take part in research (being undertaken by Dr Jo Hawkins at the University of Leeds) to help us map and understand the local spaces across Leeds that matter to you. The research aims to influence cultural and spatial policy across Leeds so that it reflects your local identity and local environment.

Anyone over 16 years old and living in any of Leeds City Council’s 33 electoral wards can take part.

We invite you to take part in 2 separate activities. An online survey and a walking interview (you do not need to take part in both unless you would like to do so).

1)  The online survey (available at https://arcg.is/CnWbr) asks you to drop a pin on our map for any location across Leeds and to tell us what this space means to you. This could be any type of location, big or small, indoor or outdoor e.g. ranging from your favourite bench, to a local venue. The survey lets you do this in a number of different ways (as creative/uncreative as you like!)

These include:

  • written submission e.g. a short description of the space, an account of time spent in the space, creative writing/poetry
  • an image based submission e.g. photo, artwork
  • an audio submission e.g. a sound clip of the location, a short recording talking about the space, a piece of music

2) The 60 minute walking interview. We are asking people to walk us around their local area so that we can explore local spaces that matter to you. Interviews should last no longer than 60 minutes and can be arranged at a time to suit you. For these interviews, there is a £20 Love2shop gift voucher as a thank you for your time.

Your contribution will be used to produce a research briefing aimed at influencing cultural and spatial policy across Leeds, and an interactive map that showcases local spaces and why they matter.

If you would like to chat about the project, or have any questions, please do just get in touch by email at [email protected], telephone on 01133439822, or by post at Liberty Building, University of Leeds, Leeds LS29JT.
