The long wait for a Council House in Leeds, 2022

A lot of people are looking for accommodation in Leeds, and many people want to apply for Council housing.

If you know people who are “holding out” for council accommodation, please make sure they know the following

  • In 2021, Leeds Council had 54,377 houses/flats to let.
  • In 2021 Leeds Council had a waiting list of 24,058
  • In 2021, Leeds Council let 1,657 of these houses/flats to new social tenants – which will include most refugees and other migrants looking for their first place in Leeds.

This means that 3% of existing Leeds Council housing stock was let to new social tenants (and 5% of the total Leeds Council stock was re-let in 2021).

Looked at another way, on the current rate of stock/turnover, it will take about 8.5 years for everyone currently on the waiting list to get rehoused.

Please see the tables below that contain this data
