Leeds City Council – City of Sanctuary Local Authority Network Award – Update Feb 2024

  • Leeds City Council joined the City of Sanctuary Local Authority Network last year (May 2023). Following approval by the council leader, Councillor Lewis, and executive member for communities, and Councillor Harland.
  • The council are currently in the process of mapping council services to inform an action plan that aligns with the Leeds Inclusive approach to Migration and the City of Sanctuary; learn, embed, and share principles.
  • The council’s next step is to apply for awarded membership.
  • Steering group: a City of Sanctuary Local Authority Network Steering Group met for the first time on the 9th of October. A summary of the meeting was shared on the LMP blog: Leeds City Council joined the City of Sanctuary Local Authority Network | Migration Partnership
  • Councillor Mary Harland, the executive lead for communities, chairs the meeting which is attended by representatives from Leeds City Council, Leeds City of Sanctuary, and people with lived experience of seeking sanctuary. Mary Brandon and Ian Kemp represent the Leeds City of Sanctuary at the steering group.
  • The steering group current priority is to plan a workshop that facilitates a conversation between people with lived experience of seeking sanctuary and services, enabling people with lived experience to share their thoughts about how they have settled in Leeds.
  • An update about the upcoming workshop will be shared on the LMP bog, inviting LMP representatives to attend.
