Important things to do when you receive your Refugee Status – a briefing sheet Jan24

Although many of us who meet and support homeless Refugees are not resettlement experts, we have a role in helping people to understand how and when to access Universal Credit, Housing Options and Bank Accounts.

This document was compiled by Jon Beech at LASSN, primarily for use by volunteers. The information in this document has been gathered from recent conversations with Housing Options, DWP and advice agencies like Chapeltown Citizens Advice and Ebor Gardens Advice Centre. If you would like to update it or amend it, please email [email protected] who can grant you editing rights.

Even if we can do nothing else, we can

  • help direct people to Housing Options
  • remind folks of the importance of starting their Universal Credit claim as soon as possible,
  • help manage people’s expectations around getting a council property (even if someone is in priority need),
  • share the unwelcome news that an affordable place probably looks like a room in a shared house.
