A Community Connectors Project has been established within the Migration Team (who are based within the Communities Team at LCC) to support new migrant communities to connect with local services and existing community networks by encouraging participation and independence, that benefits all communities.
16 neighbourhoods in Leeds are now categorised as being in the most deprived nationally.
The council has chosen 6 to focus on initially, 5 of these areas have a higher numbers of new communities which are the target of this work.
Community Connectors aim to provide wraparound support to these migrant households, regardless of their immigration status or needs. With their consent, we will try our best to signpost them to the right services if we are unable to meet their needs. Areas of need may include: housing, safety, education, health and well-being, finance and basic needs (food, clothing etc.)
The following priority neighbourhoods are the focus, however referrals will be accepted from outside of the targeted streets:
- Beeston Hill within the Hunslet and Riverside ward (Sophie Tong)
- Cliftons and Nowells within the Burmantofts and Richmond Hill ward (Roseline (Rose) Akhalu)
- Lincoln Green within the Burmantofts and Richmond Hill (Arif Younis)
- Recreations within the Holbeck and Beeston ward (Yazmin Akinola)
- Holdsforths and Clydes Approach within the Armley ward (Olivier Nkunzimana)
