NACCOM Regional Report – the state of destitution in Yorkshire and Humber

NACCOM, the No Accommodation Network, is a UK-wide network of organisations working to end homelessness and destitution amongst refugees, people seeking asylum, and other migrants. We are one of 22 organisations within the NACCOM network working in Yorkshire and Humberside.

A new report published by NACCOM highlights the state of migrant destitution in Yorkshire and Humberside, the role that voluntary organisations like ours play in supporting people out of homelessness, and the urgent need for action from local government.

See below some of the key findings from the data:

  • At least 451 people experiencing destitution approached NACCOM members in the region for support between April 2021 to March 2022.
  • People were most frequently in informal or insecure accommodation (e.g.: sofa surfing) when they approached members for support (52%), whilst a third came directly from Home Office accommodation.
  • NACCOM members accommodated 327 people, providing a minimum of 71,698 nights of accommodation, across Yorkshire and Humberside.
  • People who have been refused asylum (202, or 62%) were the group most frequently accommodated, followed by people with refugee status (100, or 31%).
  • NACCOM members provided financial support to 446 people across Yorkshire and Humberside.

The report includes practical recommendations on what Local Authorities can do within the limits of the law to tackle homelessness amongst migrants with restricted eligibility or no recourse to public funds – which includes working in partnership with organisations like ourselves.
