Elections 4 May 2023 – Voter ID requirements (and who can vote)

The way you vote in person is changing.

The UK Government has introduced a requirement for voters to show photo ID when voting at a polling station. This new requirement will apply for the first time in England at the local elections on Thursday 4 May 2023.

To work out if you are eligible to vote, use the tool on the Electoral Commission’s website https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/i-am-a/voter/which-elections-can-i-vote.

This helpfully lists the EU and commonwealth countries/crown dependencies whose citizens may be able to vote in UK elections.

Eligible people can register to vote using this form.

If someone is registered to vote, then they will need valid photo ID. A current Biometric Residency Permit is acceptable photo ID
