Can refugees and migrants vote in UK elections 2024?

Here’s a previous article from 2017 which explains that having leave to remain does not automatically give someone the right to vote in UK General Elections, no matter how long they’ve been in the UK*.

For an explanation of who can vote in UK elections (and in particular changes to voting rights of EU Citizens since 2021): https://www.migrantdemos.org.uk/can-i-vote

https://canivote.org.uk is a very user friendly way of finding out if you are eligible.

Even if you are eligible, you can’t vote unless you are registered. Register to vote here https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

And her’s an overview of all elections, local, regional, national and includes everything you could possibly want to find out, including ID requirements https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/voting-and-elections

*Curiously it’s the LMP blog’s most visited article
