Advocacy Together event to promote voices of disadvantaged groups – Thursday 20th July 2023 from 10am-1pm

Next month, a free event will be held in Leeds to shine a light on the voices of people from disadvantaged communities in the city. Advocacy Together is organised by The Advonet Group, a leading Leeds-based advocacy charity. The event will focus on helping people from marginalised groups in Leeds to be heard, showing how advocacy can amplify that.

Advocacy means helping people to speak up about their views and stand up for their rights. Advocacy what the event is all about, especially how different groups working together can make more of a splash.

A particular spotlight on the day will be on the three fledgling local charities who won awards from The Advonet Group’s Advocacy Development Fund. They will be telling people at the event about how they are using the awards to provide advocacy for the communities they work with.

Lippy People and Middle Eastern and Mediterranean Community (MEMEC) will talk about how they help people they work with to be heard and inspire applicants who are looking for funding in year two to help their communities be heard.

The Advonet Group’s Leeds Autism AIM service will also be talking about their work in supporting marginalised people through advocacy work.

Boosting people’s voices

Philip Bramson, The Advonet Group’s Chief Executive, talked about how the event can help grow advocacy support for people in Leeds. “This event will help to boost people’s voices, especially those from disadvantaged groups,”, he said.

“By providing examples of how advocacy can help people to be heard more, we hope this event is the start of something big for those groups. We hope to work together with organisations throughout Leeds to achieve that”, added Mr Bramson.

The event will be opened by Peter Gruen, former Councillor for Cross Gates and Whinmoor for 25 years and current Chair of The Advonet Group. It is free to attend and is aimed at small charities and community groups.
