Preparing for the Illegal Migration Act, Leeds – 6th Feb 2024

Tuesday 6th February
12:30pm-3:30pm
at Middle Floor, 23-25 Wharf St, Leeds LS2 7EQ

The Illegal Migration Act (IMA) is now law. We are just waiting for the commencement orders which will start enforcement of the most worrying sections of the Act. This is not another change to the asylum system, we are looking at the end of the asylum system as we know it.

We need to think collectively about what this will mean, and what we can do in Leeds to prepare.

Who is this event for?

  • Grassroots community groups of migrants, refugees & people seeking asylum.
  • Community and voluntary organisations working in solidarity or providing support to migrants, refugees & people seeking asylum.
  • Advice and information services for migrants, refugees & people seeking asylum.

What will the event be like?

It will be an informal meeting to share with each other how we are preparing our communities to face the impact of the Illegal Migration Act (IMA). We will have a run-through of the changes that the IMA will bring. A panel of invited speakers giving their thoughts and perspectives. Breakout discussion groups. Open discussion and Q&A.

We will look at:

  • What we know about the IMA so far: what has changed, or is about to change.
  • The impact the IMA might have on our communities.
  • How to prepare for the changes.

Who is organising the event?

Right to Remain is a migration justice organisation working across Britain. They provide information, resources, training and assistance to help people to establish their right to remain, and work to challenge injustice in the immigration and asylum system.

Migrant Action is a migrant justice-based organisation enabling migrants to feel welcome, access justice and effectively integrate and thrive in the UK.  As an organisation, their analysis of migrant justice is rooted in humanity, empowerment, systemic justice and transformational change.

Why are we charging for tickets?

We kindly ask any funded organisation, or groups with paid staff members, to pay a small amount for a ticket to the event.

Charging for our events enables us to mitigate no-shows, plan our resources accordingly, and subsidise the free places given to people going through the system / from unfunded groups.

If you are from an unfunded or voluntary group, please use the form to request a free ticket, and someone will get back to you.
