Fasting in Solidarity – Ramadan 2024

Many of our colleagues and friends across Leeds will soon be celebrating the holy month of Ramadan, which is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims are required to spend a period of 30 days abstaining from food and drink during daylight hours, as a means of celebrating and reflecting on their faith. This year, Ramadan is expected to begin on Monday 11th March and end on Tuesday 9th April.

To mark Ramadan in 2024, the Leeds City Council Equality Team and its Anti-Muslim Prejudice Working Group are launching a ‘Fasting in Solidarity’ campaign where non-Muslims are invited to join their colleagues and friends and experience fasting. This could be in the form of giving up a meal (such as lunch or dinner) or fasting for a full day on Tuesday 19th March. The campaign aims to give people an understanding about the beliefs and practices of people from different cultural and religious backgrounds. Participants may also choose to donate any money saved from fasting to charity.

An online session will take place on Thursday 7th March from 1pm-2pm lead by members of the Leeds City Council Race Equality Staff Network on what the holy month is about, how to support Muslim colleagues and friends during this time, as well as some personal reflections on Ramadan and further information about the Fasting in Solidarity Campaign.

How Do I Get Involved

  • Email [email protected] by Wednesday 6th March with your name/organisation to say you would like to take part in Fasting in Solidarity.
  • Attend the session on Thursday 7th March. A link to the session will be sent out after we receive the email to say you would be interested in taking part.
  • Fast for a period of time, give up a meal for the day, or fast for the full day from sunset to sunrise on Tuesday 19th March.
