Research on NHS debt and immigration decision making

Doctors of the World are undertaking a research project to explore the impact of NHS charges/debts on the health, wellbeing, finances and settlement of vulnerable migrants. Through our Hospital Access Project we see the impact of the National Health Service (Charges to Overseas Visitors) Regulations on people’s access to NHS services and health outcomes. We now want to explore how:

    • NHS charges/debts are impacting immigration cases and applications for settlement / indefinite leave to remain in particular.
  • If maternity / medical debts are impacting families and childrens’ ability to regularise their status and settle.

We are looking to interview caseworkers and legal representatives to gather their experience of NHS debt and immigration decisions. The anonymised findings will be combined with data and case studies from Doctors of the World’s case work into a final published report.

If you have experience of this issue or can recommend someone else who may have expertise in this area, please do get in touch with Marina ([email protected])
