Job: Get paid to help the Independent Office for Police Conduct do better at working with diverse populations – deadline 16th April 22

Do you want to make a difference and get paid while doing it? If the answer is yes, then the IOPC Aspiring Professionals Programme may be for you!

What is your identity and what are your characteristics? Are you Black, South Asian or do you belong to another ethnic minority? Do you consider yourself to have a disability, be neurodiverse, or from the LGBTQ+ community? Are you female, returning to work following a career break, a carer or someone with lived experience that would infuse our work to deliver excellence and an equitable service?

The IOPC is an organisation steeped in history, influenced by significant events such as the racist murder of  Stephen Lawrence and the subsequent Sir William Macpherson report which saw our creation. We oversee the police complaints system in England and Wales, setting the standards by which the police should handle complaints and to oversee equity in policing. As a completely independent organisation, we seek to uphold the rights of the public and investigate the most serious matters, including deaths following police contact, to promote learning and influence change in policing.

The Aspiring Professionals Programme is a paid four-week summer placement in the IOPC. Starting in early July, our IOPC Aspiring Professionals will work as part of a team on equality projects that will help us to engage better with our diverse communities. They will also gain experience of working in the public sector and receive guidance that will help with future applications to IOPC positions.

We recognise that having a diverse workforce is essential to bringing different ideas and perspectives to the organisation and to enable us to represent the communities that we serve. We want to offer the programme to candidates of all ages (minimum age is 18), characteristics and backgrounds who can bring a variety of life experience, unique skills and cultural knowledge into our organisation. We are particularly interested in applications from members from marginalised groups, including individuals with protected characteristics and individuals who are neurodiverse.

Attached is further information about the programme:

  • A promotional poster for potential candidates
  • An infographic to demonstrate the equality work that we do at the IOPC
  • A link to our website explaining the role of the IOPC Who we are | Independent Office for Police Conduct
  • A job description for the IOPC Aspiring Professional role

The application process for the programme is now open through the recruitment portal of our website, where more information about the IOPC can be found. Please note this programme will run from 4 – 29 July and pay £1,406 for the four weeks. The deadline for applications is 16 April.
