Refugee and Asylum Seeker Support

Telephone support

Face to face Drop-Ins

  • Meeting Point drop-ins focus on providing food, clothing and a warm, friendly social space for refugees and asylum seekers.
    • Monday 20th December 14:30-17:00 
    • Monday 27th December 14:30-17:00
    • Monday 3rd January 14:30-17:00 
  • PAFRAS drop-ins (St Aidan’s Community Hall, Elford Place West, Leeds LS8 5QD):
    • Wednesday 15th December 10:00 – 13:00 is the last drop-in for casework.
    • Wednesday 22nd December 10:00 – 13:00 Christmas drop-in to collect takeaway food, food parcels and presents for children. There won’t be a social space to stay but a Ukulele band will be playing so it feels like Christmas.
    • PAFRAS re-opens on the 4th of January.

Cultural Food Hubs open over Christmas

  • Hamara’s foodbank (Tempest Rd, Leeds LS11 6RD) opening times:
    • Friday 24th December (11am-3pm)
    • Wednesday 29th December (11am-3pm)
    • Thursday 30th December (11am-3pm)
    • Friday 31st December (11am-3pm)
  • Community Foodshare at St Aidan’s Church, Elford Place West, LS8 5QD
    • 24th December (10-11:30am) and 31st December (10 -11.30am) food parcel collection. Customers to wear a face mask and provide proof of name and address (exceptions for those who have no fixed abode)
  • Give a Gift will be closed from the 23rd December and re-open 4th January but will provide general emergency food packs city wide over the Xmas period.
    • The emergency number is 0113 3805676.

Health

Urgent treatment Centres are for people who need to see a Doctor or a Nurse urgently, but where the condition is not life threatening. Here are the details of the Urgent Treatment Centres in Leeds open every day (includes 25th December and 1st January) from 8am – 11pm 

NHS Walk In at Shakespeare Medical Centre in Lincoln Green is also open every day (includes 25th December and 1st January) 8am – 8pm

Social Activities

Mindwell have listed community events over Christmas and new year 2021/22.

Asha is open from the 20th – 24th December for people to drop-in and access support (43 Stratford St, Leeds LS11 6JG). Classes will resume after the 4th January.

Homelessness/Accommodation

Asylum Seekers and Refugees should contact LCC Housing options – their out of hours number is 07891 273939

  • Some emergency accommodation for roofless people may be available over this period, but it can only be accessed via LCC Housing Options
  • St George’s Crypt will only usually take refugees or people with the right to remain in the UK.
  • If temperatures drop beneath zero degrees overnight then the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol kicks in and anyone can find shelter, regardless of their immigration status. You can find out if the SWEP has been declared by looking at the Street Support Website. Check daily after 3pm

Homeless Households with Children under 16

  • Homeless households with children under 16, should contact Leeds City Council and ask for help under Section 17 of the Children’s Act (regardless of their immigration status). They can also use the emergency out of hours number 07891 273939.
