Women’s Aid Training: Forced marriage awareness & Working with families affected by domestic abuse

Forced Marriage Awareness and Good Practice Wednesday 19th April, 9.45am-4pm, Leeds City Centre.

The course equips professionals to work confidently with young people and adults affected by forced marriage and honour-based violence by exploring:

  • Forced marriage in the context of honour-based and domestic abuse
  • What motivates honour-based abuse and forced marriage?
  • Extent and impact of forced marriage
  • Experiences of survivors
  • Barriers and consequences to fleeing forced marriage
  • How organisations have failed victims and implications for practice
  • Roles of the Forced Marriage Unit, Social Care and Police
  • Risk awareness and safety planning

Working with Families Affected by Domestic Abuse Monday 24th April, 9.45am-4pm, Leeds City Centre.

The course gives professionals an in-depth understanding of domestic violence and abuse as it affects individuals and families:

  • What is domestic abuse?
  • How does living with violence affect children?
  • How does a controlling relationship affect parenting?
  • Why are some people abusive?
  • Why doesn’t the abused person “just leave”?
  • How can professionals avoid colluding with abusive behaviour?
  • Understanding injunctions
  • Risk assessment, safety-planning and good practice.

Both courses are appropriate for professionals, volunteers and managers working in social work, education, health, criminal justice, children’s centres, counselling/therapy and voluntary sector organisations.

The cost is £75 to voluntary sector agencies; £85 for statutory agencies and £120 for private sector services.
