Update from the new Migrant Health Board

Background

The Leeds Health and Wellbeing Board have created a sub group called the Migrant Health Board. This group will report directly into both the Health and Wellbeing Board and Leeds Strategic Migration Board.

The Migrant Health Board met for the first time on Thursday 22nd February, and was Chaired by Ian Cameron, Director of Public Health. Those attending included reps from Public Helath, Primary Care, the Hospitals, NHS England, the Leeds Strategic Migration Board. Ruth Davany (PAFRAS) and Jon Beech (LASSN) attended on behalf of Leeds Migration Partnership Strategy Group.

What was discussed?

Formal minutes/notes from the meeting will be circulated later, but we thought you should know the general gist of what was discussed asap.

After a round table discussion of potential priorities and concerns, it was agreed that all parts of the Health System needed a common understanding of recent changes to Health Charges, which services were eligible for charging (including NHS and its 3rd Sector and private contractors) and specifically which migrant groups were affected.

It was then agreed that the first action of the Migrant Health Board an event should be organised in the very near future to discuss who is affected (migrants groups and services) and what our next steps might be. Liz Bailey from Public Health and Jon Beech from LASSN/LMP are drafting plans for how this event might work, and the date has yet to be decided.

What happens next?

Other issues (such as Board Membership, frequency of meetings and terms of reference – as well as areas of concern/improvement etc) will be addressed at future meetings of the Migrant Health Board which is due to meet again, to discuss progress on the MHB Health Charging event in about a month.

Please be assured that updates will appear on LMP Blog as soon as we have them. IN the mean time, if you have any questions or queries, please get in touch with Jon or Ruth and they’ll do their best to help you
