Schools Census Opt-out

via The Children’s Society

The school census for all children over 5 in England was taken last Thursday (19th January). For the last few months, schools have begun to request country of birth and nationality information for the census, which has been used by the Home Office for immigration enforcement purposes. The Children’s Society are supporting a boycott of the collection of this information, as this pupil data is not appropriate for the DfE to be collecting and passing on to the Home Office for immigration enforcement purposes.

All parents have a right to refuse or, if you have already given the data to the school, retract your child’s country of birth and nationality data from this collection before Thursday. The data is taken every term, so it’s still worth doing if you don’t manage this week.

It is important that British nationals and nationals of other countries alike join the boycott for it to be effective. A template letter, which you can print and fill in, is viewable here:

Parents are entirely within their right to do this as the submission is non-compulsory.

Please pass this on to any parents you know and, where possible, challenge schools that are collecting the information, as there have been reports of schools not notifying parents that they can opt out, or asking other inappropriate questions about a child or family’s migration status. If you have any questions or concerns, do let me know. You can also read more here: https://www.schoolsabc.net/
