RETAS Volunteer Information

Dear all

Please share this message widely.

As most of you know we are providing structured ESOL classes for asylum seekers that have been here less than 6 months. This is supported by contracted teachers and also volunteers. We are lucky to have a wonderful volunteer who is a qualified teacher in Iran and they are successfully teaching a group of Farsi/Dari speakers (with support/coaching and mentoring from me and the wider teaching team). Our volunteer is now taking the first steps into transferring their overseas qualifications, plans the lessons themselves (under guidance) and has gained valuable UK work experience.

We are hoping to respond to continued demand for these classes and replicate the success we have had with our Iranian volunteer with an Arabic speaker; therefore I am asking if anyone knows of someone who maybe suitable. I am looking for someone with the following:

Good English skills (does not have to be perfect)
Possibly overseas teaching experience
Aspirations to teach in the UK

The person will work as a learning assistant at first alongside myself/a teacher but with support will begin to deliver parts of the class themselves.

In return the volunteer will receive, access to training, ongoing coaching/mentoring and CV/job application support in the future.

The classes are normally delivered 3.30 pm to 6pm, therefore the volunteer will need to commit to these times (even if it is once a week). We cover expenses for our volunteers.

If anyone is interested they should email me directly.

Many thanks for your help

Best wishes
Joanne
