On 19th February 2024, the Home Office announced the Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme (UPE). This grants a further 18 month stay for Ukrainians on the existing visa schemes. Ukrainians will continue to have the same rights to access work, benefits, healthcare and education throughout their stay.
This scheme provides reassurance to Ukrainians in the UK for their future as the war continues. Government guidance has now been published. The scheme will open for applications from 4th February 2025.
Applying for the UPE scheme is free, applicants must be resident in the UK and on one of the existing Ukraine visa schemes. This is not an automatic extension of their existing visas. Applicants can apply when their current permission to stay expires in 28 days or under.
Thank you payments will continue for hosts who are still hosting Ukrainian refugees on the Homes for Ukraine and UPE schemes. From 1st April 2025 these will remain at £350 a month and no longer rise to £500 a month after guests have been in the UK for a year. This will also apply to hosts who are already receiving £500 a month.
Leeds City Council is assessing the impact of these changes and will circulate details to hosts, guests and partners and provide further assistance as and when required.
