Home Office research on EU citizens – urgent responses needed

The Home Office are undertaking research to support the UK government to put in place a Settlement Scheme for EU citizens currently living in the UK. This reflects the agreement reached with the EU in December which will allow these citizens (and also UK nationals living in the EU) to continue to live and work in the UK as they do now, with ongoing rights to healthcare, work arrangements and access to benefits. You can read more about this at Status of EU citizens in the UK: what you need to know.

Leeds has been chosen to take part in this research because the annual population survey published by the Office National Statistics last autumn indicates that we have a relatively high number of EU citizens living in our area.

The Home Office have commissioned ‘Britain Thinks’ to get the views of key stakeholders, including local authorities to seek to understand our expectations and priorities relating to the EU citizens living in our area. Leeds City Council’s Chief Officer for Communities – Shaid Mahmood will be interviewed by ‘Britain Thinks’ as part of this research.

In the spirit of partnership working we would welcome your views on how the Home Office and Local Authorities can best work together during the implementation of this Settlement Scheme and anything else you feel strongly about that could impact on the citizens of Leeds.

The outcome of this research will help shape the future way of working at a National and Local level.

Please email Bash Uppal [email protected] by Thursday 26th April 12 noon at the latest, so that they can pull together for Shaid feedback he can refer to in his interview which is taking place on Monday 30th April
