FREE: Christine Choy’s From Spikes to Spindles 13 January 2018, 2–3pm at Leeds Industrial Museum

A free screening of a documentary on workers in New York’s Chinatown, at Armley Mills Industrial Museum this Saturday afternoon.

As part of our Interwoven Histories project Pavilion presents Christine Choy’s 1976 film From Spikes to Spindles

This raw portrait bears witness to the early days of an emerging consciousness in New York’s Chinatown community during the mid-’70s. We see a Chinatown rarely depicted, a vibrant community whose young and old join forces to protest police brutality and hostile real estate developers.

Woven through the film are reminders that this is a community built by workers: from the early laborers driving spikes into the transcontinental railroad to the garment industries of the day.

The film will be presented against the backdrop of our current Interwoven Histories exhibition at Armley Industrial Museum.
