#CutTheCollaboration – Stop the Home Office building a new immigration enforcement centre

Calling for support!

Anti raids group across the UK have collaborated on a joint action calling for companies profiting from racist borders to #CutTheCollaboration. We’re asking you to help us on Wednesday 13th January with the power of the keyboard. Full event details here: https://fb.me/e/SHuxmM0Z

What’s happening?
For those who aren’t aware, the Home Office were granted permission in October 2019 to move their current operation in central London a new premises in the Royal Victoria Docks area of Newham – Warehouse K.  The Home Office are preparing to present a ‘change of use’ application to Newham Council in order to include a new Reporting Centre with 35 custody cells in order to detain people before they are taking to immigration detention centres. Warehouse K is less than 10 minutes drive from London City Airport.

Read the proposal here (from the Home Office’s planning agent – this document sugar-coats the plans): https://www.warehousekconsultation.co.uk/

Why must we oppose this?
Reporting is a punitive and excessive means of immigration control where people trying to regularise their status must attend the Home Office in person on a regular basis. It is often an extremely stressful and traumatic experience. People are most likely to be detained when they go to report and will have no prior warning of this happening. Legally, the Home Office can only hold individuals for up to 24 hours at the centre before being released or moved on to “permanent facilities.” i.e. immigration detention centres. The UK is the only country in Europe to detain people indefinitelyDetention centres are inhumane and a breach of human rights. There has been a wide range of reporting in recent years of overcrowding, mistreatment, violence and neglect.

The Home Office have continued in person reporting through November lockdown and are continuing in this current lockdown.

Who’s involved?
The Home Office has worked with a number of different companies on their plans, many of whom would prefer to keep their involvement in racist state violence hidden from public view while they continue to promote their facade of being charitable and inclusive.

Posts you can use on WEDNESDAY

The Home Office is building a new reporting centre, Warehouse K, with 35 holding cells for sending people to immigration detention. The UK is the only country in Europe to detain people INDEFINITELY and is a violation of human rights.  Several companies are quietly profiting from racist immigration enforcement. iDEA, Turley, Turner and Townsend and Melburg Real Estate Management its time to #CutTheCollaboration.

Editorial note: At LMP we love people having opinions and sharing them, and we’re pleased to welcome activist groups like Leeds Anti-Raids Action into the broad church that is LMP. We think carefully before posting anything on LMP and use the editorial guidelines as our guide. We’ve hosted opinion pieces on LMP before, and we’re currently taking the line that this is not a (party) political campaign or event (although we think you could argue either way that this is/not “directly connected to issues around asylum, refugees and migration in Leeds.”)

If any LMP members have any comments (of support, or to raise concerns) please get in touch with [email protected] either via email, mobile 07845298047 or at our regular Zoom Ups.
