To respond to local residents who need help and support with emergency food which better meets their cultural needs, Hamara has been identified as the Cultural Food Hub for the City (this is in addition to Hamara operating as a Volunteering Hub).
The Cultural Food Hub will purchase food to better meet diverse need such as : plain flour, chapatti flour, rice, oil, kidney beans, chick peas, lentils, fresh fruit and veg, seasonings etc. This will not include non-essential items or food with strict storage controls, such as, fresh meat.
Access to cultural food support will be available through:
- Direct referrals to Hamara. Hamara will co-ordinate cultural food provision for the City and will deal with direct provision for South Leeds
- Hamara will also work in partnership with organisations and Volunteer Hubs in other parts of the City to enable provision in these areas.
- Referrals through the COVID 19 helpline will be passed to Hamara as appropriate.
Partnership working with organisations across Leeds:
- The provision is to assist people not presenting for food parcel assistance via the COVID helpline. Front line services supporting with communities with emergency food provision can contact Hamara to work in partnership by accessing culturally appropriate food for their organisation to redistribute.
The Cultural Food Hub provision will be reviewed in the coming weeks.
