via Henriette at LCC Communities Team
The MAP Team is facilitating a specialized training course for community leaders and organisations working closely with newer communities to learn about the purpose of the census and are writing to invite you to attend.
The census is a head count of everyone in the country on a given day. In the UK, a census has been taken in England and Wales every ten years since 1801 (with the exception of 1941). The next census will be on the 21st March 2021.*
Training is being delivered on Thursday 10th December 14:00 – 15:30 and you are invited to attend. The training will explain what the census is, why we need to do it, and how to reassure diverse communities.
This will also be an opportunity to understand how you can get involved.
If you are able to attend please confirm by email to [email protected] and we will book your place.
Editorial Notes
- Statutory bodies rely heavily on Census Data to inform their spending decisions, so they like as many people to complete them as possible
- The census forms are only issued in English & Welsh
- People who do not complete the census may be fined up to £1,000 – although last time around, of the 1.6 million people who did not return them, fewer than 400 were referred by the ONS to the Crown Prosecutions Service, resulting in only 120 convictions, According to the ONS “The amount of fines imposed by the Courts so far vary between £50 -£350 with an order for costs of £85 in each case.”
- Although Census data remains anonymous for100 years, the information provided is not 100% confidential. Detailed information is routinely shared with OECD by all EU Member States, for example
- According to the author of Luke’s Gospel, Jesus ended up being born in Bethlehem because of a Census
- More info about the 2021 Census can be found on this page and on the following slides.
