Call for Evidence: Asylum Support Levels and Challenging Home Office Methodology

via Andrea at Asylum Matters

Asylum Matters is working with partners to collect evidence to challenge the Home Office’s assessment of adequate asylum support rates and demonstrate the impact of living on low levels of asylum support. The Home Office recently increased the level of asylum support (Section 95) by 80p weekly – from £36.95 to £37.75 – but we believe that the methodology used to determine this rate does not take into account many of the realities faced by asylum-seekers. We have pulled together the attached document which outlines the statements and assumptions made by the Home Office as part of their review of rates which we would like to gather evidence on to ascertain whether they accurately reflect the lives of those living on asylum support.

Please do get in touch if you are able to provide evidence and circulate this call-out to your networks. This evidence will be used in briefings for MPs and Lords in order to raise the profile of the issue in Parliament, and to feed into a submission to the 2018 review of support levels where we will call for an increase in rates. Please send all information to Emma Birks [email protected] by 20th March.
