Via Asylum Matters
Here are the immigration statistics for October to December 2017. Key asylum figures are below and you can find the data tables here. The most notable finding is that the backlog of cases pending an initial decision for more than 6 months has grown by 39% (from 10,552 in Q3 to 14,650 in Q4).
Applications:
- In Q4 there were 7,175 asylum applications, compared with 6,487 in Q3.
- In the last year (2017 Q1 – Q4) there were 26,350 asylum applications, compared with 30,747 in 2016. This represents a decrease of 14%.
Decisions:
- There were 5,454 initial decisions in Q4 of which 24% were grants of asylum (1,294) and 1% were grants of HP/ DL (61). This compares to 5,000 initial decisions in Q3 of which 26% were grants of asylum (1,297) and 2% were grants of HP/ DL (85).
- In the last year (2017) there were 21,290 initial decisions, of which 28% were grants of asylum (5,957) and 1% were grants of HP/ DL (232). This compares with 24,895 initial decisions in 2016, of which 29% were grants of asylum (7,137) and 1% were grants of HP/ DL (301).
Pending cases
- There were 27,845 cases pending initial decision at the end of Q4 2017, of which 14,650 were more than 6 months old. This compares with 21,394 cases pending initial at the end of Q3 2017, of which 10,552 were more than 6 months old. This represents a 39% growth in the backlog of cases waiting for an initial decision for more than 6 months.
Appeals
- In Q4 2017 there were 3,430 appeals received and 2,639 appeals determined, of which 38% were allowed (991). This compares to Q3 when there were 2,659 appeals received and 2,850 appeals determined, of which 37% were allowed (1,050).
- In the last year 2017, 11,097 appeals were received and 14,149 appeals were determined of which 35% were allowed (5,022). This compares to 12,333 appeals received in 2016 and 12,581 determinations of which 40% were allowed (5,051).
Asylum Support
- At the end of Q4 2017, there were 40,736 asylum-seekers on section 95 support (3,020 subsistence only and 37,716 in dispersed accommodation). This compares to Q3 when there were 39,414 asylum-seekers on section 95 support (2,904 subsistence only and 36,510 in dispersed accommodation).
- At the end of Q4 there were 2,689 people receiving section 4 support, compared to 2,531 receiving section 4 support in Q3.
Resettlement
- In Q4 there were 220 people resettled via the Gateway Protection Programme, 5 via the Mandate scheme, 1,144 via the Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme and 158 via the Vulnerable Children Resettlement Scheme.
