Asylum Matters – looking for case studies – Deadline 2nd June

WYDAN members have discussed how some asylum seekers are being given eviction letters (from Urban House) because they are believed to have assets/money that they must spend before they can access support.

It appears that the rules around the retention of cash are not being made clear in the asylum screening process in London, and so some people are spending their money without realising this may be viewed as assets they can use to live on.

Lorna from Asylum Matters and Bill Dennis from Migration Yorkshire have agreed to raise this issue with the Home Office, and ask that an explanation about the rules around people’s money and what they can / can’t spend be part of any crib sheet / script used by interviewers, to make sure that the procedure is clearly explained to all asylum seekers from the start.

Lorna will be putting together a briefing paper on this and needs case studies to back it up. If you have come across any service users who have experienced these issues, please send them on to Lorna. Her e-mail is [email protected]

These do not need to be in depth; a brief illustration of the problems the person has faced and why will be fine. If possible, it would be great if you could get these to Lorna by the end of the week (Friday 2nd June).
