Arts without Borders – Free Party 20th June 2019

Open Source Arts are celebrating Refugee Week ‘19 with a mixed-arts event on Thursday 20th June, featuring informative Talks, Crafts, Live Music, YouTube Disco, Dancing, and free Food.

A #PAYF (Pay As You Feel) celebration bringing together asylum seekers, refugees, their friends, family and allies in order to rejoice the cultural contribution these groups have made to Leeds and the wider area.

We understand transport costs can be a barrier in attending the event. If anyone needs help to travel to the event, please text 07845298047.

Jon Beech from LASSN mentions how “Leeds has always been a place where creative people have connected with one another, regardless of their class, race, religion or who they fancy – and Arts Without Borders continues this tradition.”

Everyone and anyone are invited to contribute songs to a YouTube Disco playlist – which will feature an eclectic mix of dance tracks from across the globe – even if they cannot make it to the event.

Refugee Week is a UK-wide umbrella festival of arts, cultural and educational events and activities that celebrates the contribution of refugees to the UK and promotes better understanding of why people seek sanctuary. Its ultimate aim is to create better understanding between different communities and to encourage successful integration, enabling refugees to live in safety and continue making a valuable contribution.

“Open Source Arts is diverse by design – in our projects, our plans and the people we work with! We love the richness which people from all over the world bring to our great little city of Leeds, and we are super excited about celebrating together at Arts Without Borders: A Party for Refugees & their Allies. Hope to see you there!” Phil Marken, Open Source Arts’ Founding Director

This event is delivered by Open Source Arts in collaboration with Leeds Asylum Seekers Support Network, Asylum Matters, Manuel Bravo Project, Mafwa Theatre, Meeting Point Leeds, Refugee Council and Arts Together Leeds.

“Arts Without Borders: A Party for Refugees & their Allies” is part of Open Source Arts Summer programme of activities and events. A full calendar of this programme can be found on the Open Source Arts website, opensourcearts.co.uk.
