Arts Together, is a citywide arts engagement project which aims to open up a wide range of opportunities from across Leeds and beyond to groups and organisations that work with people that might normally face barriers (financial, social, health, etc.) to engaging with the arts. The project is currently in a six-month development phase and will launch officially on Thursday 29 August (save the date!) with a new website and newsletter. Refugee Week events 2019
You can start things off by joining The Holbeck Choir on Tuesdays, starting Tuesday 4 June at 6.30pm where you’ll get to sing and share lovely food. After a couple of days off to rest the voice, you could head down to Leeds Central Library on the Friday or over the weekend and take in the ‘Refugees Voices: Past and Present’ exhibition, as well as the ‘Celebrating 70 years of the NHS’ exhibition from Space2.
The following Tuesday, you could sign up for a special refugee and asylum seekers workshop and performance around the theme of Lullabies at 4 – 5.30pm at the One Community Centre on Cromwell Road hosted by Opera North, followed by a trip back into town to the library for the launch for the Refugees Voices exhibition that you checked out on the Friday. That evening, or the following day, you could pop along to Red Ladder’s ‘Black Teeth and a Brilliant Smile’ in either Hawksworth or Belle Isle, or check out Mafwa Theatre’s performance on the Wednesday at Leeds City Museum if you’re staying central – that starts at 6pm.
On the Thursday 20 June, let your hair down at Open Source Arts ‘Arts Without Borders’ party ‘til late. But not too late as you’ll need to be in good voice the next day for the Asmarina Choir drop-in session at Leeds Playhouse’s First Floor down near Yorkshire Dance and the BBC, from 1-3pm, followed by a trip out to Seven Arts to celebrate the summer solstice with South Asian Arts UK – a wonderful evening of performance, dancing and a Persian buffet.
You’ll need a day of rest after that. But on the Sunday, head out of town to Wakefield for the Street Party with Yorkshire Sculpture International to celebrate the unveiling of Huma Bhabha’s new sculpture. You can book a space on a free bus to bring you there from the centre of Leeds, and after much food and wonderful art, you’ll be back just in time to head down to the Holbeck to round off the week with The Chef Show, starting at 5pm – part comedy play, part cookery demonstration!
