Q2 2017 Asylum Stats

The immigration statistics for April to June 2017 have been released today. Key asylum figures are below and you can find the data tables here.

 Applications: 

• In Q2, there were 6,172 asylum applications, compared with 6,516 in Q1.
• In the last year (Q3 2016 – Q2 2017) there were 27,316 asylum applications, compared with 36,546 in the previous year (Q3 2015 – Q2 2016). This represents a decrease of 25%.

Decisions: 

• There were 4,883 initial decisions in Q2 of which 32% were grants of asylum (1,541) and 1% were grants of HP/ DL (38). This compares to 5,953 initial decisions in Q1 of which 31% were grants of asylum (1,825) and 1% were grants of HP/ DL (48).
• In the last year, there were 22,982 initial decisions of which 29% were grants of asylum (6,745) and 1% were grants of HP/ DL (288). This compares to 26,270 initial decisions in the previous year, of which 33% were grants of asylum (8,589) and 1% were grants of HP/ DL (254).

Pending cases

• There were 20,889 cases pending initial at the end of Q2 (of which 10,033 were more than 6 months old. This compares with 20,442 cases pending initial decision at the end of Q1 (of which 8,679 were more than 6 months old).

Appeals

• In Q2 there were 2,418 appeals received and 3,445 appeals determined, of which 34% were allowed (1,175). This compares to Q1, when 2,590 appeals were received and 5,205 were determined with 35% allowed (1,806).
• In the last year 11,182 appeals were received and 16,264 appeals were determined of which 36% were allowed (5,815). This compares to 12,547 appeals received in the previous year and 9,579 determined of which 42% were allowed (4,066).

 Asylum Support

• At the end of Q2 there were 38,954 asylum-seekers on section 95 support (2,827 subsistence only and 36,127 in dispersed accommodation). This compares to Q1, when 39,365 asylum-seekers were on section 95 support (2,861 subsistence only, 36,504 in dispersed accommodation).
• At the end of Q2, there were 2,493 receiving section 4 support, compared to 2,462 in Q1.

 Resettlement

• At the end of Q2 there were 147 people resettled via the Gateway Protection Programme, 7 via the Mandate Scheme and 1,228 via the Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme. This compares to 245 via Gateway, 15 via Mandate, and 1,601 via VPR in Q1.
